How do NVC trainers thrive?

We hold integrity in our community relationships. We also need an income. Holding both at the same time is the question this pilot sets out to answer, together.

The question has been alive in our community for a long time. At the NVC International Intensive in Queensland in January 2013, conversations about income generation kept returning to three kinds of belief.

  • Spiritual and cultural beliefsFor some of us, running a business sits uneasily with NVC when it's likened to a spiritual practice.
  • Individual capacity beliefsDo we believe we have 'enough' skills and capacities within us to run something that sustains us financially, and even thrives?
  • Beliefs about capitalism, marketing and entrepreneurshipHow do we act with integrity inside structures and cultural ideologies that can challenge us?

Striking the match, again and again

“I have struck the match many times to try to flourish in my business, I've put in a committed effort and met plenty of the challenges and learned much along the way.”

Kaz T. Anderson

On my own

In my generating income story, I've met my own fear, shame, anger and grief and been able to go from charging $120.00 per coaching hour to now selling packages for $3,600.00. Breaking these individual and cultural patterns has been challenging alone.

With others

Working together has not been an idyllic picnic either. Team dynamics, leadership, legal structure and income sharing all test our intention for Power With. Having a mutual wellbeing agreement as a first step is critical.

What we have inherited

We're soaking in the same Western culture: individualist, capitalist, patriarchal, military complex and colonial ideas. Mine came with an Air Force childhood and a household where money ‘did not grow on trees’, even though, by the facts, we had plenty.

Separating the facts (observations) from the fiction (evaluations) is the first piece of work.

Under the patterns

Beneath the stories sits a perceived unmet need to feel safe and valued. The strategies we inherited for correcting and protecting when we feel unsafe or not valued are completely understandable, and have been the best we've known how to do.

  • Past and future
  • An endless to-do list
  • Fear, shame, anger, grief

Wellbeing is fundamentally social

"Our survival as a species depends on our ability to recognise that our wellbeing and the wellbeing of others are in fact one and the same."

Dr Marshall Rosenberg, 1934 to 2015

Our thriving and our joy too. On that basis then, income, which is an energy for wellbeing, is something we're more likely to enjoy as a process if we're designing and playing together (instead of carrying it alone).

When I tried to practise that, first with my family in 2016 and later with an NVC purpose team, I found I longed for three things: an NVC paradigm in common, a shared map of the cultural and inherited power dynamics we are all living inside, and structural integrity in how we agree power works.

We keep choosing between two shapes

Our culture offers either a hierarchy, or a circle where everyone is equal. That binary runs deep, and I have watched unspoken arguments about it undo good teams.

I vision structural integrity conversations where we design for flourishing that can hold more than either / or.

The wellbeing wheel: six areas of life around four practices, with the earth at the centre

A map for practising the thriving we are capable of

I call it wellbeing coordination. It gives us six areas of life to relate to, and four practices that neuroscience shows light up the brain as states of wellbeing: compassion, generosity, gratitude and dignity.

  • Finances
  • Physical health
  • Purpose
  • Time and space
  • Family and community
  • Technology

In this pilot we focus on one area, finances. The other five will be explored in future phases.

The NVC Wellbeing Team pilot

The current pilot sits inside the research year with the Australian NVC community (which started in July 2026) and will continue between December 2026 and June 2027. Phase 1 of the pilot is eight online sessions that end with a draft of a Mutual Wellbeing Agreement that can be part of the foundation for Phase 2.

Belief audit

What have we inherited about income and integrity?

  • What do you feel in your body when you hear ‘NVC trainers are offering abundant value and welcome receiving financial abundance as a contribution to their wellbeing’?
  • What would change in your life if you could hold your NVC work and financial wealth together?
  • What is your vision of a wonderful way to thrive?

Joy audit

What do we value, but overlook in our financial choices?

  • How could joy work as a strategic signal and feedback loop in our financial practice?
  • Which design tweaks to our finances could ripple out into unexpected, transformational impact?

Designing a money game

What would we agree on if we decided to play together in 2027?

  • A joint promotion agreement: how we attract people, tell stories and lift each other's NVC practice.
  • What it costs to play. We decide what money we can invest ‘in the middle’ and then we decide what we spend it on.
  • Possibly a joint offering that earns income or simply a media agreement that promotes each other. In these eight sessions we design the game. We do not play it yet.

What we leave Phase 1 with

  • A draft Mutual Wellbeing Agreement: how we take care of each other's needs, and what the work in Phase 2 might look like.
  • A belief audit and a joy audit, done to learn and deepen intimacy together.
  • A money game design and a potential joint promotion agreement, ready to play.
  • Experience together to explore whether we have a team we are happy to keep working with. After the eight sessions, that choice is entirely yours.

Phase 2 is for those who want to continue to play together. We work with the Community Canvas to explore our shared purpose, values and definition of success. Phase 2 may not start until March, a decision for those who choose to move forward.

What Phase 1 asks of you

  • Sessions are 60 to 90 minutes online, plus your own reflections and notes between sessions.
  • We ask you to commit to all eight sessions. No additional players can join once the group starts.
  • The “$$ each to play” is for discussion only in Phase 1. It will be requested in Phase 2 if the group agrees.
  • Phase 1 has no cost. It is covered by pilot support from the NVC Australian community.

Phase 1 dates

Eight Tuesday sessions on Zoom, with a break over the summer holidays.

Who this is for

NVC colleagues who would like to try something different from the individual route, and who are willing to be experimenters with me.

  • You want your income and your integrity to feel aligned for thriving.
  • You are willing to uncover the beliefs about money and power that you've inherited.
  • You would enjoy testing a shared structure with colleagues rather than keep carrying this alone.
  • You are open to a team that is small by design, so that it can ignite and flourish.

This is a pilot, and it is research

It sits inside the 2026 to 2027 NVC community research project into the business of mutual thriving. That work looks at community technology systems, community business models, longevity and wellbeing research, and economics and social value, to learn how other communities are solving these same problems and then brings that knowledge into consideration as we design the Wellbeing Team.

Nothing here is a finished program. We build it, test it and adjust it together.

Who is hosting

I am Kaz T. Anderson, a social entrepreneur, facilitator and speaker based in Melbourne. I have practised NVC for more than fifteen years and founded Activate Wellbeing as a coaching and consulting company serving the NVC and For-Purpose Community in Australia.

My work sits where community development, nonviolent communication, technology and power dynamics meet. I have spent ten years looking for a way to make NVC consciousness, power dynamics consciousness and structural integrity work together. This pilot is my next experiment.

  • Wise Women Rising, founder, 2018 to 2021An online community, including the Our Time to Shine program for new and emerging facilitators. I ended up at the top of a hierarchy that did not fit for me, and that taught me a great deal.
  • NVC Australia, community development, 2019 to 2025Regular gatherings, a newsletter and grassroots structure. I learned that team size matters: past a certain point a team becomes hard to coordinate.
  • Evolve Festival, collaborator and facilitator, 2026 to 2027Working in a for-purpose team of a size that can be agile, with a larger festival community supporting, and exploring what this next iteration might teach me.

Practising structural and relational integrity with power is at the heart of doing income and integrity together. It rests on three things, combined in a Mutual Wellbeing Agreement.

  • Collegiality
  • Capacity
  • Competency

Questions we expect

Do I need to join the eight sessions to come to the Ideas Party?
No. The Ideas Party is a conversation about Phase 1. You can come, listen and ask questions, then decide.
What am I agreeing to if I join Phase 1?
Eight sessions to design a Mutual Wellbeing Agreement together. After the eight sessions it is entirely up to you whether to keep going, depending on whether the relationships are coalescing and a shared reality is forming that feels aligned for you.
What is a Mutual Wellbeing Agreement?
A shared agreement about how a team looks after each other's needs, what it's working on and how it'll play with money. It combines collegiality, capacity and competency, and is written by the people who will live inside it.
What is the money game?
A set of designed agreements about how we put money in the middle, what we spend it on (for example promotion), and how we share what comes in. In Phase 1 we only design it. Whether to play, and when, is decided later.
Why a small team?
In earlier community work I saw that teams past a certain size become hard to coordinate. A pilot lets us test a size that can operate and flourish before we open it to the wider community.
Is there a cost?
No, Phase 1 is free to participate.
Do I need to be a certified trainer?
No. Candidates, Certified Trainers and Experienced Practitioners are all welcome.
What if I cannot attend a session live?
Sessions are recorded, but may not be shared. It is important to show up live to each of the 8 sessions.

Come and talk it through

If this question around income with integrity has been alive for you too, we would like your company.
